Fuck Yeah Hooping!

Who’s that hooper?

Hi Hooplrs! Welcome to the next installment of, Who’s That Hooper?

It’s Harlow Lestrange!

Who are you?

I’m a lot of different people… my real name is Natasha but I’ve got quite a few stage names. I’m most commonly known as Harlow Lestrange—Harlow Quinn when I do kids shows…usually people just call me Harlow.

How/when did you start hooping?

I started hooping properly in December 2009. A month or two before that I bought a toy hoop from a department store after my friend and I had spent the afternoon waist hooping with these tiny hoops. I was into staff spinning then, and wanted to branch out into other things and had no idea there was a hoop community but thought that there must be some cool things you could do with hoops… when I looked it up on Youtube it pretty much cemented that I needed to get myself an adult hoop. I ordered a hoop from Home of Poi and I became obsessed pretty much as soon as I opened the packaging :D

Who has taught you and/or influenced your hooping?

I’m ‘self-taught’ from mostly Youtube videos and tutorials. As for influence, I’m really strongly inspired by people like Malcolm Stuart, Brecken and Nick Guzzardo. Every time I watch a video of Spiral spinning fire I get goosebumps, haha.

What has been your best hooping experience?

Hm… probably last New Year’s I took my LED hoop to an outdoor rave and met another hooper (it didn’t happen often in New Zealand back then!). We spent most of the 3 days of the party playing around with hoops and learning from each other. When night came we ended up having a hoop off on the dance floor by throwing my hoop back and forth from one another, and we were also trying to think up new and cool ways to throw and catch the hoop when we passed it. I liked that party because I just spent a lot of time immersed in the hoop not at all caring about what the people around me thought.

What’s your favourite move/trick/style?

I love to groove lol. I try to incorporate levels and movement into my dance.

I can’t say I have a favourite move, it’s always changing… at the moment I’m loving rolls and I always have a place in my heart for isolations!

What kinds of music do you most enjoy hooping to?

It’s changed so much over the time I’ve been hooping but definitely hiphop. The beat is always perfect for my style of hooping, and I always just totally let go whenever it’s on.

Describe your favourite hoop?

It was my beautiful Lighted Lifestyle LED hoop just last week but now it has to be my fire hoop! I just got her made on the weekend for me and I taped her in orange and silver. She’s about 34 - 35 inches in diameter using ½” tubing. She’s perfect specs wise and I used her for the first time last weekend and it felt AMAZING.

What are your hooping goals or things you’d love to do/learn?

I wanna be the very best… like no one ever was…

I want to run my hoop business successfully and be able to perform with my hoop all over New Zealand and hopefully travel around the world with my hoops one day! I want to start an active hoop community in Christchurch (which is blossoming!) and hopefully inspire people!

Who’s that hooper?

Hi Hooplrs! Welcome to the third installment of this feature, Who’s That Hooper?

It’s Joey!

How/when did you start hooping?

I started hooping January 2011 when i was gifted a 38” Moodhoop. I was so excited when I got it and confused because I had just ordered a pizza and the hoop arrived in a pizza box. But I pulled the hoop out named her Jenny and it was done.

Who has taught you and/or influenced your hooping?

I’ve learned through a combination of watching people, hooping on my own, and some really good (free!) workshops at the festivals I go to. I have a friend Karrisa who has absolutely influenced my hooping. Love to watch her hoop and steal her tricks! I also regularly trade tricks with McCalla the last hooper on here. Another influence is my background with flow arts. I practiced with staff, poi, and rope dart for 2 years before I began hooping. I’ve developed a tendency for off body tricks.

What has been your best hooping experience?

I was visiting friends in the Tampa Bay area and we ended up at a drum circle (apparently these are weekly!) on a beach that we could spin fire on. Towards the end of the night the wind was picking up. I lit up my friends fire hoop just as the rain was starting. In front of a crowd of maybe 50 (mostly other spinners) I had my best fire set yet. That was when I realized how much I loved doing tosses, and those iso rolls over and over so fun! But it was great and I’m always kinda chasing that set.

What’s your favourite move/trick/style?

Tosses as high as I can, consecutive ones into iso rolls and such is so much fun. I like to just switch between all the different ways of doing an iso in one direction to keep it flowing. I’ve also started working with balancing the hoop in different ways.

What kinds of music do you most enjoy hooping to?

A lot. If I’m hooping by myself I’ll listen to Bright Eyes, Mumford & Sons, Modest Mouse, Cursive, Alexisonfire, Venetian Snares, Passion Pit. Idk not dance music all the time can be fun. I also think that most dubstep (I like Mt.Eden) is the easiest music to hoop to ever (and pretty fun).

Describe your favourite hoop?

My favorite I’ve had so far was a 36” Rainbow from Moodhoops with 7/8” tubing. It allowed me to breaks soooooo well. But there is something to like about any hoop so my favorite is probably just the round ones.

What are your hooping goals or things you’d love to do/learn?

Always keep progressing. Figure out more with Iso Hoops. Two(Three?) hoops at once!

Who’s that hooper?

Hi Hooplrs! We finally have a second installment of this feature, so Who’s That Hooper?

It’s McCalla!

How/when did you start hooping?

Last March me and my boyfriend at the time were sitting on the couch watching tv when he got a mysterious package. Upon opening it, we discovered that his friends Jordan and Victoria (who own and make the hoops from moodhoops.com) had sent him a free hoop. Now I had just gotten into the burner community and was trying my luck at poi with little to no avail but honestly the hoop didn’t impress me much when Joey pulled it out to play. One day him and I and a few other friends took a trip to Pigeon Mountain to flow and I was getting really frustrated and bored with poi since I wasn’t really good at it. Joey hands me his hoop and tells me to try. As soon as I put the hoop around me it was bliss. At once I was able to shrug it up to my neck and hoop around my face and I knew at that moment it was love. I got my own moodhoop not too long after that.

Who has taught you and/or influenced your hooping?

Honestly I taught myself. I watched various videos on youtube and learned most of my more complex tricks from babzrobionson on there. But really it was all me. I put a lot of time and dedication into learning to hoop. I was my own inspiration. I would practice at least 30 min a day everyday and watch videos of girls hoop dancing all the time. Every time I saw a trick I liked I set out to learn it and practiced and practiced and practiced until I had it down. Now I just practice with my flow, new tricks appear in my dancing without notice. If you let the hoop move how it wants thats bound to happen :)

What has been your best hooping experience?

Hmm, thats a tough one. Hooping brought me into the Atlanta Flow Community which I appreciate since I have met some beautiful people there. But really my favorite experience with the hoop is the love and connection I have with my hoop. When I flow in the circle we are one. Two things moving in tandem. The hooping space is spiritual and sacred, nothing there is sadness. It is all joy, expression and creation.

What’s your favourite move/trick/style?

I mostly stick to on body moves even though I have a good couple off body under my belt. I love vertical hooping and do face barrel rolls, shoulder barrel rolls and shoulder and face tosses in the vertical often. I guess face hooping is really my favorite. I started doing it the day I first hooped and I’ve added different tricks and variations of it as time has progressed. Its a lot of fun but I cant seem to get a lot of people to do it with me. Oh and my style involves moving up and down and bending and twisting and contorting my body as much as possible. It makes for an interesting performance.

What kinds of music do you most enjoy hooping to?

Caravan Palace (electro swing)

Tool

Imogen Heap

Electro House Folk music

Classical

But never ever ever drum and bass. I really just can’t hoop to drum and bass

Describe your favourite hoop?

http://moodhoops.com/shop/sunrise/

36” diameter, 20 LEDs, 3/4” OD tubing, weighs 14 ounces, good for those who like their hoops light and springy, and for sustained spinning This was my first hoop. I learned everything with it. Its light, flexible, durable, and it is mine. Her name is dragonfly and she’s been re electrical tapped lord knows how many times with all sorts of different neon colors. I take her everywhere and everytime I try and use any other hoop its never the same. I wouldn’t trade her in for anything in the world.

What are your hooping goals or things you’d love to do/learn?

I want to teach hooping classes and also be a performance hooper for a living. I would also like to learn the art of holistic hooping in order to use my hoop to better my spiritual being.

Where can we see more of you?

I don’t really have any hooping pages up but you can always follow my tumblr where I post most of my pictures and all of my videos that involve me and the hoop

Who’s that hooper?

Hello everyone… so we decided to have a new thing on FYH, we want to feature hoopers and make them tell their stories :)

We will pick one or two hoopers per month and ask them some questions… ;)

So that you get a feeling… let’s start with myself :P

This is me…

How/when did you start hooping?

My name is Jojo and I started hooping 3 months ago. I never was a really sporty person and I couldn’t find the energy to do something that is actually sporty til I found hooping. Someone I know over the internet was hoops for over a year now and she got me interested again… I saw a video of her hooping and I wanted to do it too… next time I was at the toy-store I got myself oneof those water-filled kiddy hoops :P It took me a whole day to keep this thing up. I was wondering why this was so hard and so I started some research. I got to know that I had the wrong size especially because I am a really tall and curvy girl… So I got myself a big training hoop and from there the magic began. It has been love from first spin ;)

Who has taught you and/or influenced your hooping?

At first I wanted to find a class but only found one that was very expensive… hooping is not as popular as in the US in Germany… especially where I live, so I decided to teach myself.

I looked up online tutorials for everything and got a book about hooping.

Everyday I started learning something new and worked on it til I could do it… now I am mostly working on my flow and dance moves.

What has been your best hooping experience?

The best thing about hooping is that it makes me so happy. It is good for my body and my soul, I get fitter and healthier and I feel that way too. If I have a bad day I hoop the stress away. And I have a lot of awesome moments, everytime I manage to do something new or inspire someone to pick up the hoop I am very proud.

I also loooove hooping at festivals and see other people smle and getting interested. :)

What’s your favourite move/trick/style?

My favourite tricks are the chest roll cause it is so much fun and the bunny ear pass cause it took me so much work to nail it and the feeling of doing it for the first time was really fantastic.

I also love to play a lot with jumps.

What kinds of music do you most enjoy hooping to?

That totally depends on my mood, Ilove bellydancing music and oriental beats, as well as dubstep, electronic music or chilled guitar-music. Some of my favourites are Magnetic Man, Devendra Banhart, Nit GriT or Imogen Heap.

Describe your favourite hoop?

My favourite hoop was a gift from my father… it has a layer of pink vinyl tape then a spiral of golden mirror tape and one of rainbow prism tape and in the other direction one spiral of green and one red gaffer ;) It is 41 inch in diameter and looks pretty used and fucked up ;) I do think that is time to part with it soon though, I am feeling the need to use a lighter and smaller hoop now.

What are your hooping goals or things you’d love to do/learn?

I recently started making my own hoops and I want to inspire other people to pick up the hoop and try… I also want to never stand still and learn more and more so that I can do perfomances one day or even teach people.

Hooping gives me so much and I wanna try giving this to other people.

Where can we see more of you?

You can find me on my hoolaland tumblr for sure and on hoopcity ;)
